Safety at Broadhurst Landfill

At Broadhurst Landfill, keeping our community and our workers safe is the most important thing we do. Safety is a priority throughout our operation, from the very base of our landfill’s liner to the trucks we screen as they enter our gates.

How We Protect The Community

  • Built Strong: The Broadhurst leadership team has more 120-years of combined experience in landfill management and environmental responsibility.

  • Protects Groundwater: Broadhurst has a detailed groundwater monitoring program in compliance with Georgia Environmental Protection Division protocols and all data are shared with state regulators. This monitoring network provides for early detection of landfill influences on onsite groundwater so they can be proactively addressed before any potential impact to offsite groundwater that could be used by the public.

At Broadhurst, 21 groundwater monitoring wells are sampled twice a year for a broad range of constituents. Two zones at different depths (deep and shallow) are monitored.

  • Protects the Air: Broadhurst operates a sophisticated landfill gas system, which extracts landfill gas –- a natural byproduct of decomposing waste –- and routes the captured gas to a flare system for safe destruction. The landfill gas system collects and safely destroys more than 270-million cubic feet of methane annually.

  • Monitored Continuously: Trained personnel using advanced safety equipment and technologies monitor all aspects of landfill operations, ensuring responsible landfill management.

  • Screened for Radiation: Broadhurst screens every load of waste for potential radiation with an industrial RadComm Radiation Detection System. This ensures that regulated radioactive waste can be screened from acceptance and properly managed in coordination with state authorities.

  • Screened for Electronic Waste: Load checks take place every day to prevent and minimize e-waste disposal.

  • Protects Surface Water: Broadhurst completes sampling of surface water on the site and storm water leaving the site and reports the data to the Georgia Environmental Protection Division to ensure surface waters are protected.

  • Inspected Regularly: Broadhurst is inspected twice annually by the Georgia Environmental Protection Division, and has earned strong marks during inspections in the past two years.

  • Overseen Continuously: Broadhurst Landfill is regulated by state and federal authorities, and has a record of coordination and compliance.

In addition, the Landfill team uses Fleetzoom data management software that allows its operators to monitor both the gas collection system and leachate storage system right from their smart phones. This ensures that personnel are informed about our infrastructure operation 24-hours a day.
